Jack Hartwell Vardaman

Jack Hartwell Vardaman, 83, of Birmingham, died May 15, 2004.

Services will be held at 1 p.m.

at the Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church , Tuesday, May 18. The Rev. Roger Short, Alton Parris and Audie Hodges will officiate. Burial will follow at the Wilsonville City Cemetery. Jefferson Memorial Gardens is directing the services.

Mr. Vardaman is survived by his wife, Marjorie Bentley Vardaman; sister, Bettye Vardaman (Howard T.) Plott; granddaughter, Jacklyn Price Vardaman; numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces; and a host of loving friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Bentley Vardaman.

Mr. Vardaman was a renowned educator serving in Jemison, Anniston and Tuscumbia, where he retired as superintendent of schools. He served on many state committees trying to help improve the educational system of Alabama. After retirement, he was called back into education, serving as Headmaster of John P. Morgan Academy in Selma until his second retirement. Mr. Vardaman was a graduate of Howard College where the was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity. He received advanced degrees from both Auburn University and the University of Alabama. Mr. Vardaman was an active member of Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church. As a lifelong Methodist, he was always involved in many aspects of each church where he was a member. Mr. Vardaman served his country during World War II, where he took part in the Battle of the Bulge.

Pallbearers will be Michael Walker, Dale Walker, Brian Kittrell, James Meredith, Keith Brown and Rick Wheeler.
