It’s the kind of event Bloch Park was made, and is immaculately groomed for.
High school ballplayers are battling it out this week on Selma’s professional level field for the right to call themselves AISA state champs.
The five-day event brings 12 teams and bus loads of fans, parents and supporters to Selma as they try and cheer their favorite team for the title.
Don Oswald, Executive Director of the AISA said it’s great for the event to be back in Selma.
“We enjoy coming over here, it’s always a treat,” Oswald said. “Parks and recreation, Elton Reece are all very supportive. They do a great job.”
Though no area teams made it to the elite 12, the tournament is still a boon for one local school.
Meadowview Christian is the host school and handles the concessions for the five-day tournament.
“I believe they see the Meadowview people and they know we’re hosting it,” Meadowview coach Danny Forman said. “We try have a smile on and give them the best food possible and try to let them enjoy the game even more.”
With teams coming from across the state, the tournament has been good for Selma’s tourism business for more than 20 years now.
“It’s been a long time that we’ve been coming here,” Oswald said. ” It’s a good tournament.
We added another day to it this year.
Kind of spread it out so the day won’t be so long.”
Macon East was crowned the 3A state champion Wednesday in a thrilling 1-0 contest.
More champions will be crowned on Friday.
Games begin Friday at 10 a.m. with Wilcox Central playing Edgewood at Bloch Park.
Action will begin at 11 a.m. over at Wallace-Selma as Lakeside and Jackson battle for the right to play Abbeville.
