Burglary suspect caught, arson suspected in separate incident

Nine minutes after receiving a burglary report from an alarm company, police arrested Carl Earl Rivers for the crime.
Rivers stands accused of burglarizing Bargain Town on Magnolia Drive.
The front door of the building was smashed and a 25&uot; television and a bicycle were stolen.
Police received the report at 2:30 a.m., Friday, Rivers was arrested at 2:39 a.m., according to police reports.
Rivers is charged with third degree burglary for the incident.
According to Bargain Town store manager Allie Huff told that all the merchandise was recovered.
The Bargain Town was burglarized several times in the past, Huff said.
The night before, the &uot;out&uot; door of the store was broken, Huff said, in a possible attempted burglary.
According to Huff, the building is protected by a motion sensor alarm system, but the doors aren’t. If no one enters the building the alarm is not tripped.
Also on Friday, an armed robbery was reported at the Stop-n-Shop on West Highland Avenue.
According to police reports, a suspect driving an older model Toyota Camry robbed the store at gunpoint, using a small, black semi-automatic pistol. No one was injured in the incident, but reports say money was taken.
The Selma Times-Journal was unable to contact the police department or representatives of the Stop-n-Shop at presstime.
Alleged Arson Burns Trailer:
At J&J Trailer Park, a trailer burned to the ground late Thursday night in an apparent arson, according to police reports.
At 10:47 p.m. firefighters were called to lot one, at the trailer park.
According to Johnny Hall, one of the owners, the trailer was the only one owned by the park. &uot;That one came with the park…when we bought it,&uot; Hall said. The trailer was unoccupied at the time, although the trailer was a total loss. Six months ago was the last time it was occupied, according to Hall. Hall said the resident was buying the trailer in installments. &uot;We had to evict him,&uot; Hall said.
Police reports value the trailer at $4,000. Hall said the fire was only the second in the park since they bought it. Another belonged to a park resident and was put out soon after it started.
