Three times Ed Miller’s Dallas County Lady Hornets had their backs pressed firmly to the wall Wednesday afternoon at home.
The Hornets trailed by a run with two outs and no one on in the final inning.
They rallied and forced extra innings.
Then West Blocton scored two runs in the top of the eighth only to allow Dallas County to rally and tie it again.
Finally in the top of the ninth, Blocton scored a run but allowed Dallas County two in the bottom of the ninth to steal the 6-5win.
The rally wouldn’t have been possible without a two-out double by Jessica Melton in the bottom of the seventh. Rachel Coley singled the runner home, but was thrown out
trying to advance to third on the throw to the plate.
A pair of errors helped Blocton plate two in the top of the eighth, but an error in right field, a sac fly and a an error on a wicked hop at second allowed the Lady Hornets to tie the game again.
Blocton took a one-run lead for the final time in the top of the ninth.
Courtesy runner Cherie Lane started out on second to begin the bottom of the inning.
A groundout moved her over before Courtney Lambert singled her home.
An error on Melton’s fielder’s choice moved the winning run into scoring position.
After a strikeout, the Lady Hornets best hitter, Chelsea Chamberlain, stroked the game-winning Texas-Leaguer into the outfield.
Chamberlain also had a double and a triple in the game.
Cassie Newman had a sac fly, a single and an RBI.
Lane singled twice in the win.
