George E. Jones III will not run for district attorney.
Jones, a local attorney, withdrew his candidacy for the Fourth Judicial Circuit district attorney’s seat in a statement released Monday. Remaining district attorney candidates include local attorney Michael Jackson and District Attorney Ed Greene.
In his statement, Jones notes that he chose to bow out in order to devote his full time to the private practice of law. He declined to give an interview.
Jones, who originally declared his candidacy in the first week of February, said he wanted to run because he believed people were ready for change. &uot;I think people are tired of politics as usual in the courthouse,&uot; Jones said. &uot;Folks are tired of sweetheart deals and political favoritism for the selected few. People say it’s time for some new blood.&uot;
At his declaration, Jones elaborated on phrases such as &uot;tough on crime&uot; and &uot;law and order&uot; to describe his campaign. He added that Selma’s crime task force was a step in the right direction, but noted that until the district attorney took a stand to prosecute all defendants to the fullest extent of the law, no number of suggestions would accomplish anything.
