Crime doesn’t reflect Selma’s way of life

In today’s STJ there is a report about the Japanese production company which is filming its newest movie on the streets of Selma.

Unfortunately, this story does not detail the progress or the quality of the extras which the company has sought while filming in our town.

Rather it is a story of a theft of a substantial amount of money.

It is sad that outsiders have felt the wrath of crime within our community.

However, what people have forgotten is that not only in Selma, but in every town in the United States if you leave your home or vehicles unlocked some may say you are asking for an intruder to take your property without any opposition.

Once upon a time you could leave your doors unlocked and a sign in the yard stating you will be out of town for a month and come home with nothing bothered or missing.

Those days are long gone.

The fact remains that theft is theft and someone who steals another’s possessions should face the consequences of our court system.

There is a common sense rule that has become a standard, which is to lock your doors and definitely never keep large amounts of cash on your person or in a vehicle as was the lesson learned this past Sunday.

Remarkably the folks at the production company realize that the act of whoever stole their property does not provide an accurate reflection on the entire city of Selma.

Also in today’s STJ there is a letter to the editor not about politics, crime or someone’s anger against their neighbor.

Instead it is a letter praising the hospitality of the residents of Selma.

It highlights the politeness and charm that our citizens bestowed upon the gentleman’s family.

The letter also speaks highly of the customer service that was performed in helping them find lodging to taking their order at a local restaurant.

What you will see in today’s newspaper is a prime example of people leaving lasting impressions.

An impression whether good or bad, is a fundamental part of one’s psyche.

Remember: one rotten apple doesn’t mean the whole basket is infected.
