One of the featured speakers at this weekend’s 2004 Selma-Dallas County Men’s Conference might be a familiar face to area football fans, well maybe half of them anyway.

The Rev. Chette Williams is the Auburn University Football team chaplain and he will be one of three main speakers at the conference.

The chance to speak at the conference is an opportunity that Williams says he’s honored to have.

Williams added he’s already bought his tickets to hear the other two speak.

It’s a good thing because the conference is already sold out, making the two-day event the hottest ticket in Selma.

The conference is designed to educate men on how to be better husbands, fathers and citizens, a role that fits like a glove with Williams’ work with Auburn.

Williams, who was a three-year letterman for the Tigers in the early 1980s, returned to the Tigers to join Tuberville in 1999.

Williams also works with Auburn’s campus wide Fellowship of Christian Athletes program.

Williams’ role in each player’s life depends a lot on the player and his family.

Coming out of college, Williams said he didn’t have his eyes set on working with the football team.

After seminary he pastored a pair of churches and was the president of IMPACT Ministries in Spartanburg, S.C.

Then he returned home to Auburn where he found out that ministering to the team wasn’t all that different from pastoring a congregation.

This year has been a rough one for Auburn fans, coaches and players.

The saga over coach Tuberville’s job after the season didn’t make things easier, but Williams was available to help when it was needed.

Williams added that through the tough times, he has been able to minister to the coaches as well.

This weekend in Selma, the Lord has given Williams the opportunity to reach many more men.
