When asked what attracts people to a certain community the response normally contains some clue about the quality of life.

If that is the case then Selma is slowly gaining access to many people’s list of places to see or become part of.

Thanks to the work by those at the Larry Striplin Performing Arts Centre, people have a new or let’s say classic example of providing the utopia people seek.

Kitty Windham stated in yesterday’s STJ that you can’t beat it with a stick.

What she was referring to was the weekly Tuesday afternoon movie day for seniors.

No one is turned away and the showings begin at 2 p.m.

What makes this popular is the fact that they do not compete with the going rate of $10-$15 per the regular movie ticket cost.

Of course the titles of the movies showcased at the centre do not include the cost of million dollar actors either.

The Performing Arts Centre has movies scheduled for the remainder of February which will include &uot;Spencer’s Mountain,&uot; starring Henry Fonda, and &uot;The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter,&uot; starring Alan Arkin, that was filmed on location in Selma.

On the schedule for Feb. 29 the movie program, sponsored by the City of Selma and the Performing Arts Centre, will add a new segment, Movie Sunday, for the general public.

The first movie will be &uot;The Swiss Family Robinson.&uot;

Donations are suggested at the whopping price of $1.

Included in the cost one will receive free popcorn and soft drinks.

For those who are looking for the right setting to enjoy an afternoon with the family, there are not many opportunities other than this movie program for the community.

This program was initially started for Selma’s seniors and has grown into something bigger and more entertaining.

You will find wholesome entertainment at an affordable price.

We salute those who work so hard to put this program on and those who find the time to participate in it.

The Striplin Centre is a fine architectural building and is being used for something that benefits the community.

We encourage seniors who have not attended to mark Tuesdays on their calendars.

Those who will not admit the &uot;senior&uot; title or those to whom it does not pertain

can take advantage of the upcoming Sunday films.
