Lady Saints overcome slow first half for big win over Vols

The mighty Lady Saints of Selma, 27-1 and ranked number one in the state, faced a challenge in the second round of the Area Tournament Tuesday night at home.

Facing a game Jefferson davis squad, the Saints survived and early battle to take the 61-44 win and advance to the championship game.

The Lady Vols’ Ashley McCullough came ready to play and scored six points in the first quarter.

With her effort, the Vols trailed by just a point, 14-13, after a quarter.

The Vols took a lead early in the second quarter and extended it to 25-18 on a McCullough score.

Selma rallied as Santana Seay fed Kim Wilson for two, then later Erica Lumpkin hit a layup that cut the lead to one.

The Vols added a bucket and took a 27-24 lead into the break.

Wilson came out of the half on a mission.

She hit two quick buckets to give Selma a lead. Then Ashley Green hit a jumper, stole a pass and laid it up an in.

Suddenly Selma had a 32-27 lead.

The shell-shocked Vols didn’t score until the 2:46 mark.

Shameka Simpson scored on a layup for Selma.

Lumpkin got fancy with a steal, an around-the-world dribble and a pull up 20-foot jumper.

The Lady Saints led 39-32 after three quarters of play.

Lumpkin started the fourth with a 3-pointer from the concession stand and the Vols were all but done.

Selma outscored Davis 21-12 in the final frame to take the win.

Wilson led with 24 points and seven rebounds.

Lumpkin had a double-double with 14 points and 16 boards.

Green had 12 points and five steals while Santana Seay had seven points and eight assists.

Simpson scored four points for the Lady Saints.
