Smith Florist owner Sanford Smith got a scare as he locked up his business Thursday night about 5:30 p.m.

The front wall of the his building gave way, spilling a large pile of bricks across the sidewalk and narrowly missing a car parked in front of the building.

Police arrived and roped off the area.

Then, as Smith and his daughter watched, they directed traffic while the area was secured.

Selma Mayor James Perkins arrived shortly thereafter and offered his sympathy.

Apparently high winds put too much strain on the building’s facade.

A large part of the second floor front wall gave way.

A gaping hole revealed the inside of the building and broken timbers.

Smith, who owns the building, said that while he was glad no one was hurt, the collapse came at an unfortunate time.

The building also houses Sensational Hair.

It is located at the corner of Griffen Street and Broad Street, across from Church’s Chicken.

There is no word on when the business will reopen if at all.
