The folks at William R. Martin Middle School have always taken pride in their band. The students and band director Wess Boley put a lot of effort into each practice and performance, and now they have even more reason to keep reaching for those high notes.

Eighth-grader Claire Wilson recently became the first Martin Middle band student to earn a place in district competition.

The 14-year-old clarinet player received fourth place and a bronze medal during a Jan. 24 competition held at Tuscaloosa County High School.

Wilson said bands from other schools across the state were at the competition, and it was a nerve-wracking experience having to play for the judges.

Though it was her first time to compete for a school band district title, the Martin Middle student has participated in musical competitions before.

Along with the clarinet, Wilson has played piano for the past eight years. This talent has allowed her to participate in various piano competitions and recitals.

Boley said Wilson, along with seventh-grader Joshua Grant, were the first two students from Martin Middle to ever go to district.

Wilson said she enjoys playing music and hopes to continue being involved in band throughout high school.

Wilson, along with the others who placed in the district competition, will compete in the All-State competition on April 22-24 in Auburn.
