Ralph Eugene Swain

Ralph Eugene Swain, 83, of Crossville, Tenn., died Thursday, January 15, 2004, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He is survived by his children, Douglas (Sue) Swain, Corpus Christi, Texas; Julia Swain (Danny) Lane, Selma, four stepchildren, Thomas P. (Donna) Lauritzen, McMurray, Penn.; Richard W. (Carol) Lauritzen, South Park, Penn.; Barbara (Darrell) Laux, Pittsburgh, Penn.; Robert (Ann) King, North Huntingdon, Penn.; 28 grandchildren and 16 great-granchildren.

Mr. Swain was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth, his parents Orrville Joshua Swain and Getrude Maude Brill Swain, his brother Orville Junior Swain.

During WWII, Mr. Swain served with the 82nd Airborne Division. After graduation from University of Houston, he worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company until his retirement after 25 years of service.

He and his wife retired in Crossville, Tenn. During his years in Crossville he volunteered with the Alzheimer’s Day Activity Group, the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Association of Retarded Citizens and the South Park Senior Citizens Center.

Mr. Swain was a lifelong Presbyerian and a member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church of Big Lick.

A memorial service and burial will be held later in Crossville, Tenn.

Willie Thomas Smitherman

Willie Thomas Smitherman, 68, of Selma, died Thursday, January 22, 2004, at his home.

Graveside services will be held Monday, January 26, 2004 in New Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Hazel Louise Pigg Herrod

Hazel Louise Pigg Herrod, 69, of Selma, died Saturday, January 24, 2004. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Lawrence Funeral Home.

Willie Mae McMeans

Willie Mae McMeans. 57, of Ft. Deposit, died Thursday, January 15, 2004.

Services were at1 p.m. Saturday, January 23, at Ft. Deposit Municipal Complex with Elder Dale Braxton officiating. Burial followed in Cook Cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include a devoted husband, Joe L. McMeans Sr.; seven sons, Joel Jr. (Gloria) McMeans, John (Lela) McMeans, Warren (Kim) McMeans, Michael McMeans, Christopher McMeans, Derrick McMeans and Jammie McMeans; one godchild (Bill Taylor); five daughters, Juanita (Kennedy) McCall, Tara (Anthony) Sellers, Shaundra (Tony) Scott, Sasha Yvette McMeans and Shauneika (Jeremy) Means; four brothers, David Taylor, Frank (Sarah) Taylor, Joe (Brenda) Taylor, Walter (Barbara) Taylor

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam, Henry and Arthur Taylor; one sister, Cherry Lee Jordan; five sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; one uncle Joe Taylor; four devoted friends, Hattie McPherson, Eddie Tolliver, Geraldine McPherson, Mary Ruth McCall; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

William C. Thomas

William C. Thomas. 77, died Saturday, January 17, 2004.

Selma Funeral Home will handle the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Thomas of Selma; one stepson, William E. (Georgia) Kirkland of Lakeland, Fla.; one sister, Ruth C. (Nathan) Watkins of Livington; one grandson, Billy Kirkland of Lakeland, Fla.

Mr. Thomas was a veteran of World War II and very active in the V.F.W. Post 3016.

William Lindsey Hunt

Services for William Lindsey Hunt, was held Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Luke United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ga., Dr. Gilbert Ramsey and the Rev. Helen Berenthien officiating. Private burial followed in Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus, Ga.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Kathryn Glass Hunt; daughters, Geralyn H. Roller (Marty) of Hamilton, Ga., Kay H. Kosobucki (Dan) of Waverly Hall, Ga.; and a son, William L. Hunt III (Barbara) of Upatoi, Ga.; six grandchildren, Dr. Daniel E. Kosobucici (Leigh), Columbus, Ga, Dr. Jill Masterson (Scott) of Greenwood, S.C., Kimberly H. Enderle, (Frank) of Ravensburg, Germany, Jonathan H. Haralson (Mindy) of Columbus, Ga., William L. Hunt IV of Columbus, Ga. and Robin C. Monteith (Tracy) of Seattle, Wash.; and seven great-grandchildren.

His request was that memorials in lieu of flowers be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church or your favorite charity.

Mr. Hunt, lived in Thomaston, graduating from Marengo County High School in 1938. He married Kathryn &8216;Bradford Glass of Linden. They lived in Mobile and Selma until 1959 when he moved to Columbus, Ga.

He was in automobile sales. In Selma he was an Elk, a Mason, and a Shriner. He belonged to the Alcazar Shrine Temple in Montgomery. He was an active member of the Lions International. He moved to Columbus, Georgia and was Used Car manager for Miller Pontiac for 25 years. He earned the title of master Salesman for Southeastern Division of Pontiac, Inc. for 12 years. He remained in the auto sales business until 1988. He was a past president of the Columbus Exchange Club. He was an active Christian member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, the William Henry Shaw Sunday School Class, Administrative Board, of St. Luke and a member of the Greeting Committee. He was a member of the Valley Seniors Golf Club and a long standing member of the Columbus Country Club, He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He made friends easily and enjoyed sharing his garden and flowers.
