Mende Lawrence, operator of Mende’s Massage Therapy and Bodyworks on Highland Avenue, has been enjoying success after opening her private practice in July of 2003.

Now this massage therapist has a new reason to celebrate. Nearly two months ago, Lawrence became certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodyworks (NCBTMB).

What this means, Lawrence says, is that she can now take her practice anywhere in the country.

“I would still have to follow state rules and specific codes of ethics, but I’m certified to do massage therapy nationally,” Lawrence said.

The NCBTMB credential establishes the practitioner has having mastered the basic knowledge required to practice massage therapy and bodywork.

In order to receiver her certification, Lawrence had to take the NCBTMB examination, which required expert knowledge in anatomy, physiology, massage and bodywork theory, assessment and techniques, and business and professional ethics.

“It was a very serious exam,” Lawrence said. “I didn’t study as much as I thought I had to, and I made high marks on everything.”

Lawrence is currently a member of the American Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP) and received her training at the Montgomery School of Bodywork and Massage.

Even though Lawrence can now use her healing touch anywhere she wants, she has no plans to move far from home.

“I guess I will stay right here in Selma,” Lawrence said.

“I am proud to have met the highest professional measures by passing the National Certification Examination in therapeutic massage and bodywork,” Lawrence said. “I no look forward to maintaining my certification and staying up-to-date through continuing education in my profession.”

NCBTMB is a not-for-profit organization that tries to foster ethical and professional practices and competent massage therapist through their certification and continuing education requirements.
