A Selma man is recuperating in the intensive care unit of a Birmingham hospital after being shot four times during an apparent robbery on the corner of Franklin Street and Highland Avenue Tuesday night.

John Young, a resident in the 400 block of Grey Street, was shot after an unknown suspect attempted to steal his wallet and various other belongings while threatening him with a handgun.

The police report states the incident occurred between midnight and 12:30 a.m.

Loretta Young, the victim’s sister, said John had been standing outside a local establishment using a phone when he was approached by another man.

“My brother didn’t know this man, but had seen him around before,” Loretta said. “(The suspect) asked for a ride and they got in the car. That’s when the guy pulled a gun on him.”

According to Selma Police Chief Robert Green, the victim told police he and the suspect proceeded south on Broad Street, then east on First Avenue before continuing north on Franklin Street.

Loretta said her frightened brother told the suspect he could have anything he wanted and tried to exit the vehicle.

“My brother tried to make a break for it and he was shot in the head,” Loretta said. “Then they fought outside of the car.”

It was during this scuffle, Loretta says, that John suffered additional gun shot wounds to his chest, right hand and arm.

The suspect fled the scene and the victim managed to drive to a nearby Highland Avenue fast food restaurant to seek help.

“Officers Roy Nix and Frederick Walker responded to the scene,” Green said. “Haynes Ambulance began treating the 27-year-old victim on the site and transported him to Vaughan Regional Medical Center for treatment of gun shot wounds.”

Young was later sent to a Birmingham hospital.

“The guy left (John) for dead,” Loretta Young said. “My brother was just trying to do a good deed.”

Green said the case remains under investigation and detectives are processing evidence and developing leads.

No arrests have been made at this time.
