Hugh White Underwood Jr.

Dr. Hugh White Underwood Jr., 86, of Selma, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at a local hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Polk VanZandt will officiate. Burial will follow in New Live Oak Cemetery.

Dr. Underwood is survived by his wife, Ann H. Underwood; sons, Hugh W. (Ginger) Underwood III, Tuscaloosa; Paul S. Underwood, Hammond, Louisiana; grandson, Hugh W. (Jenny ) Underwood IV, Tuscaloosa; nephews, W.E. (Charlotte) Underwood Jr., Memphis, Tennessee; J.G. (Amy) Underwood, Arlington, Virginia; nieces, Camilla (Bill) Bracewell, Athens,

and Sharon Hamilton of Birmingham.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Griffin and Hugh White Underwood; a son, Robert H. Underwood; and a brother, William E. Underwood, Sr.

Dr. Underwood was a native of Marion. He graduated from Marion Military Institute and Emory University in Atlanta. He obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery there. He practiced in Thomasville prior to moving to Selma, where he was associated with Dr. W.J. Reynolds. He later opened his own practice for a total of 53 years before retiring in 1992.

Dr. Underwood was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He was stationed in Fort Sam Houston and Fort Benning, Georgia. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for 56 years. He was a Life Member of the Alabama Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the Southeast Prosthodontics Association, among other organizations.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Bryant Speed, Dr. Louis McMillion, Dr. Cecil Fuller, Dr. Ed Williams, Dr. Don Russell and Dr. Pelham Henry.

Dr. Paul Allen and Dr. Wiley Thomason will be honorary pall bearers.

Virginia D. White

Virginia D. White, 84, of Selma, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at a local hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, in Highland Memorial Gardens in Bessemer.

Survivors include a son, James Daniel (Donna) White; brother, Dan Atchison, Montevallo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
