We hear those words every year &045; whether in a priest’s or preacher’s message, or in a Christmas special playing on the television. The words are 2,000 years old, but their importance has not wavered over the passing centuries.

Today is the birthday of Jesus Christ. Selmians celebrate that event with church services, family, friends and presents under the Christmas tree. The day of anticipation has finally come, and all the frantic present buying and anxious feelings can melt away while watching our loved ones open their gifts.

We celebrate Jesus’ birthday by drinking eggnog and singing Christmas carols. We huddle around the piano and belt out our favorite tunes as warm fires glow in the background. At least for one day the worries of our jobs and duties can disappear as we enjoy the company of those we love.

We’re thankful we have this day to celebrate, and we remember why we’re celebrating it. It’s because of the birth of a child in the City of David that we sing our carols. It’s because of the child lying in a manger that we open our presents this morning.

Wise men brought the baby Jesus gifts. We follow their example every year on this day.
