Tigers boys and girls sweep tourney

The Marion Military Institute boys and girls played in the Pickens Academy Tournament over the weekend.

Both teams came home with first place trophies, it was the first girls championship title in the history of the school.

On Friday night, the MMI girls beat South Choctaw, 44-42.

Felecia Sprott led the way with 16 points, 18 rebounds and 6 blocks

Emily Easley added 13 points.

For South Choctaw, Kate Dahlberg had 24 points.

In boys action, the Tigers beat Southern 72-38.

Javoris Smith led with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 7 steals and 8 assists.

Douglass Fitz-Gerald added 13 points and 9 rebounds.

For Southern Erik Montz had 12 points and Thomas Langham added 11.

On Saturday, the MMI girls beat Pickens 47-39.

Felecia Sprott had 15 points and 16 rebounds to go with 4 blocks.

Emily Easley had 11 and Samantha Suttles snared 16 rebounds.

For Pickens Emily Alexander had 11 points.

Sprott and Easley made the all-tournament team.

The Tigers

won the title with a one-point win over Pickens, 38-37. Javoris Smith led with 15 points.

He hit the go-ahead basket with 17 seconds on the clock.

Smith also had 13 rebounds, 9 assists and 5 steals. He was named tournament MVP.

Fitz-Gerald had 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Fitz-Gerald and David Coleman made the all-tournament team.

The boys’ record is 9-1 while the girls are at 8-2.

They don’t play again until Jan. 6 at WAP.
