CAMDEN&045;Wilcox got even Friday night.

Recovering from a loss last week against Meadowview Christian, the Wildcats dominated at home, 53-36.

The first game of a two-night, round-robin tournament, Wilcox Academy owned three-fourths of the game.

It started competitively enough. Wilcox and the Trojans traded baskets throughout a low-scoring first quarter.

The first quarter finished with the teams tied, 8-8.

Then, halfway through the second, Wilcox burst free, capitalizing on turnovers and mistakes by Meadowview.

Led by Michael Riggs and Phillip Merryman, Wilcox began to pull away.

They beat the Trojans down at the backboard.

Wilcox worked the glass very effectively early.

The half finished with Wilcox ahead, 23-16.

The Meadowview Trojans weren’t finished yet, as a counter-attack led by John Robert Morgan brought them within range.

Morton lead the scoring for the third quarter, picking up 9 points. Then the big man got into foul trouble, and the Trojans’ drive evaporated.

Wilcox managed to weather the storm and came out of the third leading 45-27.

Meadowview was unable to mount another run with Morton in foul trouble. The Wilcox defense forced several Meadowview mistakes down the final minutes

The game ended, with the Wilcox Wildcats up by 17 points.

“We just threw the ball away,” Meadowview coach Rick Raines said. “We had a good ball game going, we just lost it.”

While Wilcox coach Chris Burford was happy with the win, he emphasized that bigger things are ahead for his team.

With a 2-3 record, Meadowview has only held four practices this season. Burford and his team are still recovering from their extended football season.

“We’ll be OK, we’re getting better,” Burford said.
