An unidentified Selma man died of gun shot wounds Thursday evening after an apparent attempted robbery of a Broad Street barber shop.

Selma Police Chief Robert Green said the 24-year-old suspect entered Open Eyes Barber Shop at approximately 9:34 p.m., shoved a customer who was exiting the business, and placed a gun to the head of another man inside.

The customer left the area and managed to seek assistance from a nearby police officer, who had been conducting a routine traffic stop at the time.

Other officers were then dispatched and alerted to the incident.

Officer Frederick Walker, the first to arrive on scene, was informed by other witnesses that the armed robber was still inside of the barber shop.

Walker immediately ordered that weapons be dropped and witnesses identified the man on the floor as the robber.

The suspect was transported by ambulance to Vaughan Regional Medical Center, where doctors later pronounced him dead.

The police chief says this incident appears to be a &uot;clear cut&uot; case of self-defense.

The shooting is still under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.

Green said no other person in the barber shop sustained any injuries.

The names in this case have not been released to the public yet, Green said, because not all family members have been notified.
