UPS’ slogan is: What can Brown do for you? The answer, at least for Selma’s SABRA Sanctuary, is a lot.

SABRA Sanctuary received a $25,000 grant from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of United Parcel Service Wednesday morning in a small presentation in the company’s Selma office.

“Words can’t express it,” a teary-eyed SABRA Executive Director Nancy Travis said.

The grant was awarded through The Foundation’s Region/District Grants Program, a one-of-a-kind initiative that allows UPS employees to recommend organizations for funding based on the needs they see in their communities.

Sanctuary is an emergency, temporary shelter for victims of domestic violence. Its mission is to provide a safe haven, intervention services, life skills education, and transitional assistance to victims of domestic violence.

“Our goal is to get these women into a better enviornment,” Travis said.

U.S. Rep. Artur Davis was a guest of honor at the ceremony and took the time to praise both UPS and SABRA.

“This holiday season so many people talk about giving,” the congressman said. “UPS is doing more than talking about it.”

SABRA Sanctuary is one of several agencies selected by the UPS District Grant Committee to be considered for a grant.
