Those attending the annual YMCA Prayer Breakfast on Tuesday described this year’s event as a rousing success. Held in the Fellowship Hall of Church Street United Methodist Church, the breakfast fulfilled planners’ expectations as more than 100 showed up, including a large number of youth, at 8 a.m.

According to Angie Miller, YMCA CEO, the purpose of the gathering is to bring the community together and to celebrate the Christian values and mission of the organization.

A number of individuals and groups participated, including the Southside High School R.O.T.C., which presented the colors, the Southside High School Choir, the Shiloh Baptist Church Youth Band, and the drama team from Selma Christian Ministries.

The Rev. George Sedberry gave the invocation. Bob Frazer, youth minister at Elkdale Baptist Church, presented remarks encouraging the youth present to take a positive leadership role in the community.

Frazer urged his listeners to take the difficult road, not the easy road, to use their God-given talents to be positive examples for others.

Frazer said he helped out with last year’s breakfast and has attended for several years. He described the turnout and the tone of the gathering as being very encouraging.

Also lifted up for praise were the efforts of members of Church Street United Methodist Church in providing breakfast for those attending.

The event concluded with prayers offered by four students representing four high schools: Morgan Yarbrough of Morgan Academy, Kim Walker of Central Christian Academy, Erica Rogers of Selma High School, and Marchand Coleman of Southside High School.

Frazer also praised the efforts of the YMCA Leaders Club who assisted in arrangements for the event.
