Ola Katherine Blackmon

Ola Katherine Blackmon, 77, died Friday, September, 26, 2003, at a local hospital.

Services were at 11 a.m., Monday, September 29, at the Chapel of Selma Funeral Home with the Rev. Alan Yarbrough officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include nine sons, Dempsey (Patricia) Blackmon of Tuscaloosa, Edward (Wanda) Blackmon, Hester (Joyce) Blackmon, Albert (Charlotte) Blackmon, Cecil (Margaret) Blackmon, Ralph (Bobbie) Blackmon, Steve (Janice) Blackmon, David (Anne) Blackmon and Victor (Bonnie) Blackmon all of Selma; one daughter, Marilyn &uot;Nita&uot; (Tim) Kaldor of Selma; five sisters, Geneva Singleton and Lida Burell of Excel, Etta Bea Bradford and Willie Mae Smith of Selma and Lois O’Neal of Colorado; two brothers, James Goodman of Perryville, and Charlie Goodman of Excel; 33 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Dempsey Blackmon and one daughter, Katherine &uot;Kitty&uot; McCullough.

Active pallbearers were Randall Blackmon, Roger Blackmon, Jeff Blackmon, Brian Blackmon, Adam Blackmon and Chris Kaldor.

Jerry Harris Coleman Sr.

Jerry Harris Coleman Sr., 73, of Dallas County, died Monday, September 22, 2003 at a local hospital.

Services were at 3 p.m. Friday, September 26, at Calvary M.B. Church with the Rev. C.A. Lett officiating. Burial followed in Pineview Memory Gardens Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include a devoted and loving wife, Johnnie Coleman; two sons, Jerry H. Coleman Jr. (Lindsay) and Staff Sgt. John Coleman, currently serving in Iraq; two daughters, Stella L. Coleman and Cynthia M. Coleman.; one granddaughter, Regine C. Coleman of Chesapeake, Va.; three sisters, Elizabeth Ragland, Carrie (John) Davis and Lenore (Matthew) Brown all of Detroit, Mich.; six brothers-in-law; and five sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and acquaintances.

Active pallbearers were represented by Maxwell Air Force Base Airman.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Calvary M.B. Church.

Flowerbearers were ushers and deaconesses.

Mr. Coleman was born in Dallas County, to the late John Shepherd and Estell Cummings Coleman on Jan. 16, 1930. He accepted Chris at an early age, and was baptized in the Present Baptist Church, Richmond, by the late Rev. J.H. Boykin, and later united with the Tabernacle Baptist Church, Selma.

His current membership was with Calvary M. B. Church, Rev. Charles A. Lett, is the pastor. Mr. Coleman received his education at Street Manuel Training School in Richmond and later graduated from Alabama State Teachers College, Montgomery, with a BS degree in history and math and later received his Master’s in mathematics. He taught in the Dallas County School System, retiring after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. He received a Leadership Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Program that have contributed to education and economics growth through the improvements of a agriculture, agribusiness, home economics, 4-H programs and the development of the community.

He was united in holy matrimony on August 7, 1959, to Johnnie M. Hale.

Mr. Coleman served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
