Foster services set

Funeral services for Marie Priscilla Foster of Selma have been announced.

Foster, who was known as &uot;Mother&uot; Foster, died Sept. 6 at a local hospital.

The services will be held at Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Morton officiating. Visitation and viewing will be at noon and services will begin at 1 p.m.

Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery with J.H. Williams and Sons directing.

One indication of Foster’s stature is the list of those who have indicated they plan to attend the services. So far that list includes the Rev. Jesse Jackson, U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., Dr. Joseph and Evelyn Lowery, the Rev. James Orange, the Rev. C.T. Vivian, and Coretta Scott King.

Foster garnered countless awards and honors during her lifetime, including an invitation to the White House from President Bill Clinton. She was also one of the first recipients of the Drum Major for Justice award from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

She was a co-founder of the National Voting Rights Institute and Museum here in Selma.

Survivors include a son, James Foster; daughter, Rose Davis; brothers Dr. Sullivan (Jean) Jackson and Thomas Martin of Selma; granddaughters Mattie Thornton and Monique Vos; and grandson Troy Davis.
