Etrolia Miles

Etrolia Miles, 93, of Forkland, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003 at a Demopolis hospital.

Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at New Green Oak Baptist Church, Forkland, with the Rev. Edward King officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home of Demopolis directing.

Donald Leslie Peck

Donald Leslie Peck, 75, of Georgiana, formerly of Selma, died Sunday, August 10, 2003 in a Greenville hospital.

Services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday August, 12, from St. Elizabeth Catholic Church with Archbishop Oscar Lipscomb officiating and Rev. Gary Williams assisting. Burial will follow in Milner Cemetery, Georgiana with full military honors and Johnson Funeral Home of Georgiana directing.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Peck of Georgiana; brothers: William (Irene) Peck of Ocala, Fla., and John (Rita) Peck, Albuquerque, N.M. sisters, Pauline Whaley, of Largo, Fla., Genevive (John) Gilbert of Anderson, Ind., Marie Childs of Crystal River, Fla., Jane (Buster) Warren of Selma and Elizabeth (Larry) Anderson of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister-in-law, Anne Black of Georgiana; 32 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Pauline Peck, and brother-in-law, Harry Black.

Family visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Georgiana.

Donald was retired from the United States Air Force and the Dallas County School System. He was an active member of Our Lady, Queen of Peace, Catholic Church in Selma, serving as chairman of the Parish Council. He contributed to the Archdiocese of Mobile as chairman of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council and as chairman of the Finance Committee. He was very active for many years in the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal organization of Catholic men. He served Council 2738 in Selma as Grand Knight for 18 years. He was also Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Assemble of the Knights of Columbus of Selma. After moving to Georgiana four years ago, Donald became a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Greenville.

Rev. Joshua Bettis

Rev. Joshua Bettis, 90, of Selma, died Monday, August 4, 2003 at local hospital.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Fairllawn Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Maggie Bettis; brother in-law, Earl Law; sisters-in-law, Daisy Law and Mary Lee Bettis; nephews and nieces and a host of other relatives.

The body will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Mr. Bettis was a former pastor of Clinton Chapel

AME Zion Church, retired presiding Elder of Greensboro-Demopolis District, member of Central City #205 Grand Inspector General 33 of the United Supreme Council and ASR of Free Masonry, SJ. USA Inc. and World War Combat veteran.

Tyler Wayne Owens

Tyler Wayne Owens, 8 days old, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at a hospital.

Graveside services were at 3 p.m. Monday, August 11, at Demopolis Memorial Gardens in Demopolis with O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include parent, Jonathan Wayne Owens and Stephanie Couch Owens of Demopolis, brother, Alex Owens of Demopolis, Grandparents, Pamela Knight of Gallion, Stan and Carol Owens of Lauderdale, Miss., Bobby Ray and Tommie Faile of Camden; great-grandparents are, Kenneth and Louise McClure of Gallion and Irma Caldwell of Akron.

Mattie Russell Moore

Mattie Russell Moore, 93, os Selma, died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2003 in New Live Oak Cemetery with the Dr. Ronald Stone officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Jones Moore, Jr.

Survivors include daughter Oneida Moore Poulsen and her husband John Hans Poulsen of Selma, son Lewis Jones Moore III of Tuscaloosa. Four grandchildren Daniel McFarland Sherling II (Denise) of Birmingham, John Kendrick Sherling (April) of Greenville, David Russell Sherling of Greenville and Oneida Moore Sherling of Greenville. Stepchildren Tina Poulsen Cox (Jim), Mary Poulsen Cole (Steve) and Elizabeth Poulsen Gilbreath (Gordon). Six great-grandchildren Daniel Sherling, III, Lee Sherling, Elaine Sherling, Russell Sherling, Jr., William Sherling and Samuel Sherling; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Moore was one of five daughters of Ruby Bozeman and David Caldwell Russell, early settlers of Dallas County, and was educated in Selma’s public schools.

She was a life member of the First Presbyterian Church and active in the Valley Creek Presbyterian Church where she was historian for many years.

Mrs. Moore was a teacher at Leika’s School, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the Colonies, a charter member of the Valley Creek Garden Club and a member of the Selma Charity League.

Mrs. Moore was a resident at Cedar Hill where she was active in its art program for several years.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to Valley Creek Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice.
