A former employee of American Apparel was arrested Wednesday morning for embezzling thousands of dollars from the company over a four-year period.

Selma resident Elizabeth Chance Cox was charged with first-degree theft after both the district attorney’s office and the Selma Police Department were provided with evidence of the crime.

Cox allegedly stole more than $100,000 from American Apparel since July 1999.

According to Fourth Judicial Circuit District Attorney Ed Greene, Cox worked as an accountant clerk with the company. The suspect allegedly created checks for various office accounts for reimbursement of petty cash funds, then deposited the money in her personal account.

Selma Police Department Public Information officer Warren Hinson said the alleged embezzlement was discovered after another American Apparel employee reported to a supervisor that Cox was possibly stealing money from the company’s accounts.

Police said it is believed that the suspect not only stole money from the Selma plant, but also from two other American Apparel plants located outside city limits.

Selma Police Detective Mike Palmer made the arrest around 9 a.m. at the department headquarters.

Cox, 26, was taken to the Dallas County Jail and her bond was set for $75,000.

Greene said that after a hearing in district court, the case will be brought before a grand jury at the end of this month.
