Louis J. Hinkle

Louis J. Hinkle, of Marion, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at a Tuscaloosa hospital.

Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 26, at Marion Baptist Academy in Marion, with the Rev. Johnson of Marion. Burial will follow in the Morning Glory Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his spouse.

William Edmund Varner

William Edmund Varner, 93, of Selma, died Friday, July 25, 2003, at a local nursing home.

Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Monday, July 28, at New Live Oak Cemetery with the Rev. Al Finch officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his children, Ward E. (Katherine) Varner and Anita Jane Varner all of Pensacola, Fla., and Franklin D. Varner of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Kimberly Schweizer of Puerto Rico, Karmen Petri of Norfolk, Va., and Krystal Kemp of Pensacola, Fla.; great-grandchildren. Grace Scheizer and Ashley Schweizer both of Puerto Rico; Sister, Mary Elizabeth Kirchner of Pensacola; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his two wives, Johnette Ward Varner and Aileen Wilson Varger.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to your favorite charity.

Mr. Varner retired from International paper. In his retirement years he was actively involved in Habitat Selma.

Marie Louise Hudson Crew

Marie Louise Hudson Crew, 90, of Marion, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, in a Perry County nursing home.

Services were at 11 a.m.

Saturday, July 24, at Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel with the Rev. Edward Pickel officiating. Burial followed in a Marion cemetery directed by Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel.

She was born Sept. 7, 1912 as the only child of William Robert Hudson and Sarah Erin Lackett Hudson of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Thomas Linwood Crew. She attended Perry County High School and studied at Judson College. She was a faithful member of Siloam Baptist Church during which time she and her mother hosted as well as attended many Women’s Missionary Union and Circle meetings. She was an active member of the Andrew Barry Moore Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was also a member of the Magna Carta and the Colonial Dames. She married Thomas Linwood Crew on Oct. 20, 1938, and partnered with him in business until his retirement from Marion Electric and Appliance Company in the early 1970s.

Survivors include her son, Thomas William Crew of Marion; daughter, Carolyn Crew (Joe) Charba of Powderly, Texas; grandchildren, Wesley Crew of Alexander City and David Hudson (Susan) Jones of Keller, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Michelle Jones, Jacob Thomas Jones, and Joshua David Jones, all of Keller, Texas.

Active pallbearers were Paul Anderson, David Jones, Jimmy Jones, Luther Woodfin, Kirtley Brown, and Gene Harris.
