Tuesday saw the official opening of Selmont’s newest road: Towns Circle.

Harold Speir, owner of Speir Land Company and developer of Towns Circle, said he named the street after Dallas County Commissioner Connel Towns. According to Speir, before Towns began cleaning up the area it was used as a dumping ground.

Sofas, chairs and cars were some of the items left behind before Towns began his clean-up effort.

Towns said cleaning up areas like Towns Circle is one of his top priorities, and he intended to continue to encourage others in the community to keep things clean as well. &uot;That will be ongoing during my time as commissioner,&uot; Towns said.

Speir contacted Towns during the area’s development and asked him if he would mind being honored by having the street bear his name.

According to Speir, development of Towns Circle and surrounding lots began last fall. Twenty-seven of 36 available lots have already been sold, and Speir said there were no restrictions on what homes could be built.

Speir also noted that water and sewer services had been installed, meaning residents won’t have to dig their own wells or get septic tanks.

Before the ribbon cutting Tuesday, Speir said he remembered reading a story about Towns claiming he would clean the area. At the time Speir doubted the claim, but one day met Towns as he was fulfilling his promise. A conversation between the two began and that led to a friendship.
