Selma beats Prattville in first of double-header

Selma scored four runs in the first two innings and then held on for dear life. They downed Prattville 4-3 in the first game of the Dixie Pre-Major District Tournament finale Sunday in Clanton.

Selma had to beat Prattville again to advance to the State Tournament in Enterprise (see above story).

Jeremy Smith had a two-RBI single to lead the Selma attack.

Reid Tolar added two singles for the Selma Pre-Major offense.

John Lawrence picked up the win on the mound. Lawrence pitched six innings.

He allowed a pair of home runs and struck out six batters.

The 15- and 16-year-old All-Stars took the lead in the first inning.

After holding Prattville scoreless, Selma jumped on top with two runs.

McAteer singled put was picked off trying to steal second.

Reid Buster came through with a two-out single and Chris Knight reached on an error. Buster scored on the miscue.

Tolar singled to load the bases.

Roman Paxton walked to force Knight home.

Prattville went down in order in the second and Selma appeared to be in position to do some real damage.

John Lawrence walked with one out.

He moved to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball.

McAteer walked and took second on a wild pitch.

Smith’s single plated two runs and gave Lawrence a comfortable 4-0 lead.

Prattville began the comeback in the third inning.

A two-out homer got Prattville on the board.

In the bottom of the inning, Selma went down in order.

A two-run homer for Prattville in the fourth cut the lead to a single run.

Selma couldn’t respond in the fourth and dodged a bullet in the fifth.

A walk and a single with an out put the tying run in scoring position, but a fly ball and a ground out ended the frame.

Tolar singled in the bottom of the inning, but was stranded.

Selma’s pitching dashed Prattville’s comeback hopes.

Lawrence struck out the side in order in the sixth. Smith did the same in the seventh to slam the door shut.
