This week the Selma-Dallas County Veterans Transitional Home Inc. began a month-long fund-raiser to

establish a safe place for financially disadvantaged people to go for help.

William Hasberry, president of the group, said the goal of the fund-raiser is to obtain at least $15,000 by the end of the month.

With this money, Hasberry says, the group hopes to purchase a facility in this area for homeless veterans and other disadvantaged people.

The facility will also be designed to give those released from prison or mental institutions a safe place to live while they try to find jobs in the community.

With the facility, Hasberry said, individuals will gradually be reintergrated back into the community through the help of training and education.

Along with organizing a fund-raiser, the group will be working to heighten awarness of the homeless in Selma and Dallas County.

At the end of the fund-raiser, a banquet is scheduled to be held with a speaker and panel of local representatives.
