In an quick-moving, exciting defensive battle, Gray’s Furniture proved they can win the tough battles as they downed Moore Stewart Saturday afternoon in 7- and 8-year-old softball play, 5-0.

Whitney Denson’s three-run homer in the bottom of the third broke the game wide open and keep Gray’s Furniture undefeated.

Both teams played exceptional defense, but in the end it was Gray’s Furniture power hitting that one out.

Laigan Godwin singled twice and scored twice.

Jade Johnson singled once.

Denson knocked home four runs with a homer and a single.

Summer Burnett singled as did Taylor Carroll.

Robyn McNeal and Sharmyne Anderson each singled. McKenna Goode added a base knock.

Lauren and Lindsay Yeldell, Amy Chandler and Jameshia Creer all singled for Moore Stewart.

After holding Moore Stewart scoreless, Gray’s took the early lead.

Laigan Godwin singled and Jade Johnson did the same.

Denson singled Godwin home but the Moore Stewart defense shut them down from there.

But Moore Stewart couldn’t get anything going on offense as the Gray’s Furniture defense was air tight.

After two batters got on, Moore Stewart pitcher Kara Rawls made two assists to third as she threw to Lauren Yeldell twice to get the lead runner.

Still trailing 1-0, Moore Stewart couldn’t find a hole in the defense.

Genesis Brown and Haley Gates each singled to start the bottom of the third.

Brown was stranded on a fielder’s choice and after a pop out it looked like Moore Stewart might escape the inning.

But Denson crushed one to left field and raced all the way around to score. She knocked home three runs and put Gray’s Furniture up 4-0.

They tacked on an insurance run when Ashley Friday singled and scored in the bottom of the fifth inning.
