Tuesday evening two fugitives wanted by the Prattville Police Department on numerous criminal charges found out the hard way that hiding out in Selma is not a good idea.

Around 5 p.m., Selma Police officer Jeff Persinger located a stolen 2003 Chevrolet Z-71 pick-up truck at a residence near county roads 54 and 86.

According to the police report, Persinger waited until he saw two people leave the residence in the stolen truck and then proceeded to pull them over on a traffic stop.

Inside the truck were Russell Spence, 35, and his girlfriend Candy Fulmer Collums, 34, both of whom gave Maplesville addresses as their residences.

District Attorney Ed Greene said the two suspects were wanted in Prattville on a variety of charges.

The police report stated officers Persinger and David Hopkins, along with Sgt. Scott Swanson, detained the fugitives and took them to the Dallas County Jail. They were later retrieved by the Prattville Police Department.

According to Greene, Spence had purchased the truck from a dealership under a false name and using someone else’s credit history. It wasn’t the first time Spence has attempted to steal an item through forgery.

In the past few months, Greene says, the suspect has been indicted on theft charges in both Wilcox and Chilton counties.

Spence had also previously been convicted in Dallas County of theft by deception involving check fraud. He served a portion of his 10-year prison sentence and completed his probation for that case, but still owes $14,000 in restitution.

Greene said he is unaware of where Spence and Collums are being held and attempts to reach the Prattville Police Department were unsuccessful.
