Big fourth inning carries Southland

A six-run fourth inning helped carry the Southland Chemical team past the Rotary Club, 11-8 Tuesday evening at the Sportsplex.

Katherine Averitt led Southland Chemical with the aluminum.

She had four singles and scored twice in the win. Tonia Neely added two singles, a double and RBI to the effort.

Iverianna William’s added three singles and scored three times.

Karlyn Savage lived up to her name, smashing a home run in the second inning.

She added a pair of singles.

Amber Brown also homered and singled. She had three RBIs.

The defenses were sharp in the early going. Both pitchers, Rotary Club’s Amy Persinger and Southland’s Averitt, snagged a line drive to take away a hit in the first inning.

Southland broke through in the top of the second.

Arianna Hill led off with a single.

She moved over on Scobie Pettway’s single.

Neely knocked the run home. but Persinger saved a run as she tagged out Pettway trying for home.

Savage didn’t take long to answer.

Her shot rolled deep into right field and she raced around the bases for the homer.

After an out and a Shakira Morgan single, Brown’s shot found a hole, allowing her to come around for a two-run home run.

Southland quickly tied it up.

Williams and Averitt each singled to get things going.

Alexis Laister grounded out but pushed a run home.

Hill added an RBI single to tie the game at three.

The Southland defense stood tall in the bottom of the inning, then the offense busted things open.

Neely led off with a double and Alisha Scott followed with a single.

Jurni Owden picked up an RBI with a single and Aaliyah Colon knocked a run home with a groundout.

Tamara Lee singled home a run for Southland. Williams and Averitt each singled to load the bases.

Laister’s base knock pushed two more runs home and increased the lead to 9-3.

Rotary Club got two runs back in the bottom of the inning. Savage led off with a single and after an out, Morgan singled as well.

Brown picked up an RBI with a groundout to Persinger.

Emily Cawley singled home a run that cut the lead to 9-5.

Hill doubled and scored for Southland in the top of the fifth, and the defense held Rotary Club scoreless.

Williams singled and scored an insurance run for Southland in the final inning, giving Rotary Club a six-run deficit.

Rotary Club made a run at the comeback in their final at-bat.

They scored three runs and brought the potential tying run to the plate twice.

Persinger, Taylor Speed and Savage all singled to get things going.

Jasmine Conner singled a run home and Shakira Morgan reached on a fielder’s choice.

Brown singled a run home.

With two runners on base the tying run was at the plate, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game.
