After ending their season with a win and a pair of losses in the state tournament, coach Rick Blevins and his Morgan Academy Lady Senator softball team wrapped their season with fifth place in the tournament and a few post season awards.

Katherine Hughes was named to the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) All-Star team to represent the East.

“That’s a real good honor for her,” Blevins said.

Other post season awards went to Lindsey Bamberg, who got the team’s Golden Glove for the outfield, and Laura Whitney Bennett, who got the Golden Glove for the infield.

The Lady Senators ended up 17-9 on the year and 7-1 in the region.

Seeded third in the AISA State tournament, Morgan beat Tuscaloosa Academy in the first game, 5-4.

Even though they’d beaten Pike Academy twice in the regular season, Morgan lost to Pike 3-1 in the tournament.

A 7-1 loss to Kingwood ended Morgan’s season.

Despite losing seven seniors, Blevins sees big things for the Lady Senators’ future.

“We’ve got seven seniors this year, but I’ve got a good young group coming up,” Blevins said.

Among the youngsters leading the way is sophomore Cate Gilmer who led the team in hitting.

“She batted .410 for the year, she hit the ball really well,” Blevins said. “She had three-game winning hits in the bottom of the seventh inning this year.”

Hayden Casey stood out for her defense.

The utility player was stationed at four different positions over the course of the season.

Brentley Wright was the team’s number one pitcher and finished the year 9-6.

Laura Whitney Bennett also handled some pitching duties and was 6-1.
