Football flows through Woodrow Lowe Jr.’s veins.

The son of a former Crimson Tide great and National Football League coach, Lowe Jr. has

built quite a football resume in his own right.

He coached at his father’s alma-mater as a graduate assistant, coached professionals in the XFL and Arena Football League and has coached Alabama high school football.

It was Lowe Jr.’s combination of experience, charisma and bloodlines that led Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. James Carter to tab the 27-year old as the next head coach of the Selma High School Saints.

Lowe Jr. spent last season as the graduate assistant offensive tackles coach under then University of Alabama coach Dennis Franchione and was Mike Price’s graduate assistant defensive backs coach this off-season. In his relatively short coaching career, Lowe has worked with coaches that know the SEC inside and out.

He worked for former Louisiana State coach Gerry DiNardo, former LSU coach Curley Hallman, former South Carolina coach and Alabama offensive coordinator Sparky Woods.

Lowe Jr. said his biggest resource is the knowledge his father has passed on from a lifetime in football.

Lowe Sr. played for Paul &uot;Bear&uot; Bryant at Alabama as a great linebacker from 1972-75.

He was drafted in the fifth round and spent 11 seasons with the San Diego Chargers, starting 151 games.

He coached at Russell County High school in Seale, Central High in Phenix City and Selma before moving back to the NFL.

In the NFL, Lowe Sr. coached at Kansas City for five years and at Oakland for two.

He then took an assistant coaching job at UAB to be closer to his family.

Lowe Sr.’s time in Selma was special to his son.

Despite staying just a season in Selma, Carter said Lowe Sr. had an impact on the Saints’ program.

Hopefully, for Selma fans, Lowe Jr. will have a similar impact but stay a while longer.

While it’s too late in the year to get any spring practice in, Lowe Jr. has met with the team and soon will be handing out his summer workout schedule.

The coach already envisions where he wants the program to go and how it’s going to get there.

It’s no surprise that Lowe Jr. plans to build that success with defense.

The coach plans to build an offense with a powerful running attack to help the Saints’ defense learn how to handle a tough running game.

Lowe Jr. replaces former head coach Jerome Harper, who was let go in February.

It may not be the last change made.

Lowe Jr., who has a wife and 3-year old son, Woodrow Lowe III (Trey), beat out 17-19 other applicants for the position.
