The road to becoming a minister can be long and winding.

Most of those who follow that road say it takes a lot of study, willingness and love of God to preach to the masses.

Dr. David Barnes, senior associate pastor at Ellwood Community Church, knows exactly what it’s like to make that journey. The experience has prompted him to share with others the knowledge he’s gained over the years.

On June 5, Barnes will teach an accredited class at the church for those with the motivation and desire to one day lead a congregation.

The &uot;Circle of Love Bible Institute&uot; is an eight-week course which could eventually allow participants to receive an advanced certificate in theology.

Barnes, who holds a master’s of divinity degree from Oral Roberts University, is teaching the classes along with his alma mater.

The university will send the course work, and students are expected to fulfill all requirements. Their work may then be counted as college credit and can possibly be transferred to two- or four-year institutions.

Every Thursday and Friday night beginning in June, Barnes will teach &uot;Old Testament Survey&uot; and &uot;New Testament Survey.&uot; Classes will start at 6 p.m. and end around 10 p.m.

Barnes said all participants will receive certificates from ORU after completing 19, 33, and 66 hours of course work.

Barnes said he hopes eventually to have guest teachers and ministers who also hold master’s degrees in divinity.

To be eligible for the institute, students must complete an application and possess a high school diploma or GED. The class fee is $135.
