Drivers who don’t wear their seat belts are already risking their lives out on the open road, but soon their pocketbooks will be facing a threat as well.

As travelers are gearing up for Memorial Day weekend, law enforcement officers are also preparing for a crack down on those who ignore the Alabama’s seat belt laws.

The campaign is known as &uot;Click It or Ticket.&uot; Drivers and passengers alike can face fines for not buckling up.

Hinson said drivers can expect to see heavy patrol and road blocks set up to check for proof of insurance and a valid driver’s license.

Depending on whether a driver is pulled over by state or local police, fines for the ticket can cost up to $25. There is also a fine for not having passengers and children in a correct restraining device.

Hinson said seat belts have been proven to save lives, and the campaign is a way to make certain that drivers are protected.

The &uot;Click it or ticket&uot; campaign is enforced by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and was established under former Gov. Don Siegelman.

There will be zero tolerance for those caught not wearing a seat belt or not having child passenger restraints.
