Travis Worley Barnes Jr.

Travis Worley Barnes Jr., 83, of Selma, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at a local hospital.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Elkdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Al Finch and the Rev. Travis W. Barnes III officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Memory Gardens Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Scales Barnes; one son, Travis W. (Becki) Barnes III; one daughter, Amy Barnes (Larry) Booker; grandchildren, Jessica M. Barnes, Christina G. Threadgill, Angela R. Barnes and Mary Beth Booker; one great-grandchild, Dylon Reid Pouncey; one sister, Marjorie B. Jowers; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers include Brandon Threadgill, Paul Combs, A. James Wheeler, Joe E. Allen and James G. Smith.

Mr. Barnes spent his life devoted to God, country, family and this community.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1919, in Aimwell as the youngest son of Travis W. Barnes Sr. and Marjorie Mayton Barnes. He graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1937 at Sweetwater High School.

Mr. Barnes served in the U.S. Army as a chief of section with the 79th Infantry Division’s 311th Field Artillery Battalion during World War II.

After the war Mr. Barnes moved to Selma. He married Selmian Mary Furness Scales on April 29, 1949, and opened Barnes Gulf Service Station in 1953. He operated the Gulf/BP station for 40 years until he retired in May 1993.

Mr. Barnes was an active Gideon for more than 30 years. Through the Gideon ministry, he traveled to various churches to speak about the Gideon Bible programs. He also taught a Bible study at the old juvenile detention center on Saturday mornings for many years. Through the Gideons, he helped distribute Bibles to prisons, schools, hotels and motels. For the past 20 years, Mr. Barnes also served actively in several positions as a member of Elkdale Baptist Church. He was recently elected Deacon Emeritus by that congregation.

Mr. and Mrs. Barnes had been married for 54 years.

Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, at Lawrence Funeral Home.

Alfred L. Johnson

Alfred L. Johnson, 49, of Selma, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at a veterans hospital in Montgomery.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. F.D. Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Delia M. Johnson; two sons, Jamie Johnson and Alfred Johnson Jr.; one step-son, Clarence Windfield; one daughter, Kristy Johnson; two step-daughters, Inell (Cecil) Hall and Sharon Chapman; three brothers, William Johnson Jr., James (Dorothy) Johnson and Micheal (Janice) Johnson; five sister, Evelyn (Willie) Bennett Sr., Janie Johnson, Regina (Foster) Davis, Yvonne Johnson and Pamela Johnson; 15 grandchildren; one son-in-law; two daughters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and host of nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers are sons and friends.

Honorary pallbearers are James Johnson, William Johnson Jr., Micheal Johnson and Charles Turner.

Early L. Moore

Dea. Early L. Moore, 80, of Selma, died Sunday, April 27, 2003 at his home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Shiloh Baptist Church on Selma Avenue, with the Rev. Joshua Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Memory Gardens Cemetery with J. H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva D. Moore; three sons, Charles (Bessie) Mitchell

and Terry Underwood all of Selma, and Earnest Moore of Baxley, Ga.; six daughters, Bettye Hicks of Buffalo, N.Y., Billie Singleton of Florida, Gennie Thomas of Georgia, Toni Watkins of Mesquite, Texas, Genevieve Moore of Selma and Chandra (Cornelius) Lowe of Birmingham; one brother, Willie Zene Moore of Georgia; two sisters, Mary Pinkard of Miami, Fla., and Evelyn McRay of Baxley, Ga.; mother-in-law, Mattie Duncan; special brother-in-law, John (Lou) Duncan; nine grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Zene and Eleanor Moore.

Mr. Moore was born on Feb. 23, 1923 in Hazelhurst, Ga. He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and retired from R.L. Zeigler after 20 years of service.

Vera Dell Prescott

Vera Dell Prescott, 77, of Jones, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at a local hospital.

Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Friday, May 2, at New Live Oak Cemetery with the Rev. Al Finch and the Rev. Norman Williams officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include one son, Tom Kenneth (Marie) Prescott of Selma; two daughters, Jean (Ferrell) Ford of Jones and Peggy (Larry) Lewis of Selma; two brothers, Clyde (Betty) McIntyre and Buck (Inez) McIntyre all of Grovehill; six grandchildren, Karen (Randy) Hamm, Tammy (Timmy) Harris, Scott (Beth) Lewis, Robert Lewis, Jason Lewis and Amanda Prescott all of Selma; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Active pallbearers are Jason Lewis, Robert Lewis, Scott Lewis, Randy Hamm, Timmy Harris and Mike Frith.

Martha Jackson Wingard

Martha Jackson Wingard, 90, of Montgomery, died Thursday, May 1, 2003.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Chapel of Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home with the Rev. Marcus Wingard officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her daughters, Betty Jane Russell of Montgomery and Murray (Ralph) Norman of Prattville; son, Dale Wingard of Ramer; nine grandchildren, Cheryl (Lloyd) Snellgrove of Prattville, Martha (David) Hardy of Autaugaville, Genn (Maxie) Register of Sewanee, Tenn., Brenda (Jonathan) Jackson of Montgomery, Dan (Lauren) Russell of Tyler, Kevin (Kalee) Norman of Autaugaville, Duane (Angel) Norman of Marbury, Sims Wingard and William Wingard both of Luverne; 11 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Willie &uot;Billy&uot; Jackson of Montgomery and Warren Jackson of Marietta, Ga.; and a special friend and neighbor, Helen Oates of Montgomery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Murry &uot;Buster&uot; Wingard, a daughter, Carrie Mae Register and sons-in-law, Pete Register and Charlie Russell.

Charlie Eaton

Charlie Eaton, 77, of Selma, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at a local hospital.
