The Uniontown landfill reared its head at the Dallas County Commission’s Monday meeting.

During Environmental Services Director Larry Friday’s report to the commission, Commissioner Curtis Williams asked if he had attended a recent public meeting about the landfill.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) held a public forum April 17 at R.C. Hatch High School. At the meeting Uniontown residents and concerned parties voiced their opinions on the possibility of a landfill just a few miles from their community.

Friday didn’t attend the meeting, but he did say the road toward the landfill was going to be rough.

Friday, though, had no problems with the concept.

He added that if the Uniontown landfill was geologically and hydrologically sound, and if the landfill was properly created and operated, he’d have no problems recommending it as a site for disposing of municipal solid waste.

Concerning those opposed to the landfill, Friday said a permit for the site wouldn’t be given unless Environmental Protection Agency and ADEM regulations were met.

Those regulations concern points such as surface and ground water.

Friday indicated that if ADEM &045;&045; the moderator of the April 17 meeting &045;&045; thought another public forum was needed they would schedule one.
