Markiece Stallworth’s trial begins today.

Stallworth, 25, is accused of assaulting three Selma Police Department officers in a March 19, 2002, incident. Prosecuting attorney Joseph Fitzpatrick said the trial will most likely last a day and a half.

The jury will be selected Wednesday morning, but Fitzpatrick said he expected the trial to begin the same day.

Stallworth’s charges stem from allegations that he, along with Mead Walker, allegedly assaulted Officer Tory Neely and two other officers near GWC Homes on March 19, 2002, around 9:15 p.m.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Neely was on a routine patrol when he observed Stallworth near the intersection of St. John Ave. and Martin Luther King St. Stallworth allegedly approached Neely and began using profanity and threatening the officer.

Neely called for back-up and then attempted to arrest Stallworth. However, according to the affidavit, he was allegedly stopped by Mead Walker who pushed Neely away from Stallworth.

Two officers appeared on the scene to assist Neely, but by this time a crowd had formed. All three officers attempted to arrest Walker and Stallworth, but they allegedly hit the officers in order to prevent their arrests.

The affidavit stated all three officers received injuries from the encounter.

If convicted, Stallworth could face one to 10 years for the class C felony of assault second degree.

Walker’s case has been continued until a later date.
