The Selma City Council voted 4 -3 to appoint a city clerk Monday night &045;&045; but they still don’t have one.

According to City Council President George Evans, the council must have at least five votes to appoint someone to that position.

Lois Williams’ city clerk/secretary candidacy was offered for a vote by Councilwoman Nancy Sewell after Sewell praised Williams for taking on the city clerk duties.

Councilwoman Rita Sims Franklin, though, motioned to table Sewell’s motion after stating the matter could be handled at the council’s next meeting &045;&045; May 12.

Sewell, though, questioned Franklin as to why they should wait.

Councilman James Durry concurred, saying Williams filled in after former City Clerk Jackie Smith left the position earlier this year. Since Williams had to sign items in lieu of a formal city clerk, Durry said it was unfair not to allow Williams to continue with the duties.

Evans then brought Franklin’s motion to table Sewell’s motion to the floor, which failed 3 – 4. Council -members Bennie Ruth Crenshaw and Sam Randolph were not present.

Sewell’s motion then passed 4 – 3 with council members B.L. Tucker, Evans, Sewell and Durry voting in favor. Council members Jean Martin, Glenn Sexton and Franklin opposed.

Opposing council members noted they weren’t voting against Williams &045;&045; who tallied the votes as they were called out &045;&045; but instead were opposing the procedure.
