All Confederates need to prepare for battle this week, because the Yankees are coming to town.

Of course, the action will be in good fun and celebration of history as Civil War re-enactors take visitors back in time to witness an exciting era in Selma.

Beginning Thursday, Bloch Park will become ground zero for one of the bloodiest fights of the Civil War. The authentic camp opens at 9 a.m. each day throughout the event for school group tours and anyone who wants to learn more about life as solider in 1865.

Visitors will see real Civil War-era weapons, peer into a soldier’s tent, and learn how doctors treated wounded victims on the battlefield.

The campgrounds will even feature live music with authentic instruments used during that period.

Friday night will feature a camp dance where everyone can learn the popular moves of the late 1800’s. There will also be an artillery night firing beginning around dusk.

Admission is free to the park for both evenings beginning at 4 p.m.

The real action will start on Saturday, when the actual re-enactment begins.

The Battle of Selma Ball will also take place Saturday. Sturdivant Hall will be filled with dignified Southern belles and handsome gentleman dressed in period costumes.

A memorial service will be held at Old Live Oak Cemetery on April 27 for the real soldiers of the Battle of Selma.

At 2 p.m. guns will sound and cannons will be lit as the true battle begins.

Visitors to the park will experience the sights and sounds of what the Civil War was really like.

The re-enactment has been listed by U.S. News as one of the top four events in the country.
