As the United States and Iraq appear to draw ever closer to war in the Middle East, Selma residents express both apprehension and a sense of conviction about the events taking place.

President George W. Bush already has ordered thousands of U.S. troops to the Middle East, making certain Iraqi President Saddam Hussein knows this nation is prepared to attack if necessary.

But even as the troops ship out, large protests continue to occur across the United States as some citizens demand a non-violent compromise.

Here in Selma many residents said they hope war is not in this country’s future.

Camden resident Allison Steeples agreed, citing theories about President Bush’s need for revenge after Hussein threatened to assassinate his father several years ago.

Other local residents say they are unfamiliar with the details of Hussein’s rule and are still trying to figure out exactly why troops are being sent to the Middle East.

Michael Sizemore, a 19-year-old resident of Selma, said contradictory reports on television make him wonder if war is really necessary.

Other residents, however, said they support President Bush’s policies.

For now, as tensions continue to mount between the United States and Iraq, Selma residents join other Americans in waiting wait and worry about which decisions will be made.
