Inez Vasser

Inez Vasser, 85, of Marion, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at a Selma hospital.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15,at Marion Baptist Academy with the Rev. John Suttle officiating. Burial will follow in Hope-well Cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Hattie Walker; one grandchild; two nieces; and three nephews.

Eva M. Burnett

Eva M. Burnett, 80, of Selma, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at a local hospital.

Services are at2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Maplesville, with the Rev. William Earl Short and the Rev. Paul Atchison officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Martin Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include sons, Larry Joe (Faye) Anderson of Plantersville and Billy (Cindy) Burnett of Selma; brother, Burt Chandler and Barney Chandler both of Maplesville; two sisters, Nettie B. Broadhead and Eula Hayes both of Clanton; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Burnett, two sons, William Earl Anderson and Douglas McArthur Anderson, one daughter, Virginia Payne and two sisters, Lucille Weathers and Maggie Anderson.

Flora Bell Evans

Flora Bell Evans, 57, of Selma, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, in Selma.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Mt. Moriah Church with the Rev. John Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Evans; three sons, Jimmie (Mary) Woods, Anthony Woods and Clarence (Gabriel) Evans; three daughters, Mary Ann Woods, Linda (Willie) Sullivan and Natalie (Willie) Craig; brothers, David Lee Woods and George Woods; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren two sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; 14 brothers-in-law; 19 sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews; special nephews, Benjamin (Victoria) Alexander of Boston, Mass.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Mary Woods and a brother, Perry Lee Woods, sisters, Minnie Lee woods and Essie Lee Woods.

Active pallbearers are family and friends.

Susie Etoya Tennimon

Susie Etoya Tennimon, 74, of Selma, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at her home.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Alan Yarbrough and Ron Gordon officiating. Burial will follow in New Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil L. Tennimon of Burnsville; daughters, Bobbie (Don) Presson of Jackson, Tenn., Faye (Cecil) Williams of Maplesville, Rae (Bill) Campbell of Burnsville, Shirley (Rip) Engle of Deatsville, Susie (Jim) Trantham and Kathy (Ron)

Gordon all of Burnsville; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; one brother, Perry (Jo Ann) Cochran of Selma; and a sister, Jimmie (Cecil) Smith of Crestview, Fla.

Active pallbearers are sons-in-law.

Sherman Sigler

Sherman Sigler, 44, of Selma, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003 at a Birmingham hospital.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Isabella Baptist Church, Tyler, with the Rev. Kevin Cockrell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with J. H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Octavia C. Sigler; mother, Willie Mae Sigler of Syracuse, N.Y.; two sons, Rico Thomas of Selma, and Leguntre Robinson of Huntsville; one stepson, Melvin Robinson of Jackson; one stepdaughter, Timeka Robinson of Jackson; one brother, Herman D. Sigler of Utica, N.Y.; two sisters, Tracey Sigler and Tiffany Sigler both of Syracuse, N.Y.; devoted grandmother, Ida Sigler; friend, devoted friend, Alton Bonner; one grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers are friends of the family.

Mr. Sigler was a life long member of Isabella Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Milton Smiley

Milton Smiley, 45, of Selma, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Walker Mortuary.

Naomi Blunt

Naomi Blunt, 85, of Dallas County, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003 at a local hospital.

Services are at 12 noon Saturday, Feb. 15, at Greater New Hop Baptist Church, Hwy. 80 E. with Elder Johnnie Blunt officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Nebo Church Cemetery, Lowndes County, with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include seven sons, Mack (Claudia) Blunt Jr., James Blunt, Frank (Eleanor) Blunt of Pensacola, Fla., Roy C. (Lois) Blunt, Rev. Johnny (Lillie) Blunt of Selma, Nathaniel Blunt and Charles Blunt of Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Dorothy (Ezekiel) Chandler of Cincinnati, Ohio, Josephine Cannon and Annie Ruth (George) Hightower; one brother, Joe Wilson of Selma; one sister, Lena Bell Walker of Gulf Port, Miss.; 42 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law; four daughters-in-law; one brother-in-law; four sisters-in-law.

Active pallbearers are grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers are deacons, trustees of Greater New Hope Baptist Church.

Melvin Benison

Melvin Benison, 49, of Forkland, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003 at a Demopolis hospital.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Lloyd Chapel Baptist Church, Forkland, with the Rev. Clayborn May officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.

Mary L. Russell

Mary L. Russell, 84, of Coatopa, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 at her home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Bethel Pine M.B. Church, Coatopa, with Rev. John Sanders and the Rev. F.O. Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Dugg Hill Cemetery with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.

Family visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Friday, at Larkin and Scott Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Russell.

Clara Nettles

Clara Nettles, 84, of Selma, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 at a local hospital.

Services are at 12 noon Saturday, Feb. 15, at Mt. Zion P.B. Church with Elder Bryan Starks officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include one son, Charles Nettles of Selma; four daughters, Mattie (Willie) parker of Columbus, Ga., Winnie (Jerry) Coleman of Selma, Barbara Cunningham of Stone Mountain, Ga., Patricia (Larry) Nettles-Pegram of Hampton, Va.; one brother, Rev. Brooks Wormely; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law; three sisters-in-law; one nephew; and three nieces.

Active pallbearers are deacons and friends.

William Augustus Powell

William Augustus Powell, 87, of Milton Fla., died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003 at a Florida hospital.

Services are at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at Houston Park Church of Christ with Minister Tom McLemore officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Memory Gardens Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include son, William Dale Powell and wife Mary Ann of Pace, Fla.; daughter, Janet Powell Willingham and husband, Don of Selma; brother, Johnny Powell of Pascagoula, Miss.; grandchildren, Keith Willingham, Troy Powell, Todd Powell, Tara Powell Kerr and husband Johnny, Tony Barlow and wife Jill, Page Barlow McCullough and husband Tony; great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn Kerr, Trenton Powell, Lori Brown, John Travis McCullough, Kayla Barlow and Elecia Barlow.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Henry Powell, daughter, Linda Powell Barlow and husband John Barlow.

Family visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, at Lawrence Funeral Home.

Mr. Powell was a Golden Glove boxer in his earlier days and fought in 80 fights. He had one loss and one draw. He worked for the railroad as a fireman and then a meat market manger for Big Bear Supermarket for most of his professional life. He was a &uot;pink man&uot; at the hospital for many years and enjoyed the patients. He was a sociable person and loved talking to people. He loved deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Betty Bates

Betty Bates, 54, of Newbern, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 in Newbern.

Services are at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at Sunshine High School Gym, Newbern, with the Rev. Herschel MsGhee Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Faunsdale, with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.

Fred Zanders

Fred Zanders, 53, of Faunsdale, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 in Newbern.

Services are at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at Sunshine High School Gym with the Rev. Herschel McGhee officiating. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Faunsdale, with Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.

DeQunida Cook

DeQunida Cook, of Florida, formerly of Autauga County, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003 in Florida.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Miller Funeral Home.

Willie Steele Jackson

Willie Steele Jackson, 75, of Selma, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003 in Selma.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at New Vernon P.B. Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include two sons, Willie S. Jackson Jr. and Robert L. Jackson; three daughters, Carol Irving, Pamela Cannon and Dana Jackson; one sister Ora Lee Moore; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one son-in-law; one daughter-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Jackson, parents, Oscar Jackson and Adline Harper and sisters, Ruby Golder and Ruthie Boone.
