Wallace program gets straight A’s

The State Board of Education has just released its report card for the adult education program at Wallace State Community College, Selma.
Results show the program received straight A’s, surpassing goals set by the state board.
The main focus of the program is to provide a second chance for people who did not graduate from high school, Lomax said.
She said students who participate have a wide variety of goals, but the majority want to receive their general equivalency diplomas.
According to the report card, over 50 percent of the students in the program who enrolled to obtain a high school diploma or GED managed to complete this task. Only 33 percent of those enrolled in adult education programs statewide managed to do the same.
Also, of the 45 students whose goals were to continue on to higher education, 33 percent managed to complete the program. This number also surpassed the statewide percentage.
The adult education classes are funded by state and federal grants, making it free to anyone who is considering obtaining a GED or improving their computer skills. However, it does cost $40 to take the GED test.
Classes are held at a variety of locations across the city, but WCCS even offers &uot;Tutoring by Telephone,&uot; which allows people studying for the GED test on their own to call for help or advice.
A community technology center is made available through the WCCS adult education program so people can use computers outside of the classrooms.
The program uses open enrollment, which means anyone interested in participating can simply attend one of the classes and sign up.
The day classes are held Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Craig Field. Night classes are held at every Tuesday and Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at WCCS.
WCCS also offers adult education programs in Marion, Uniontown and at Bush Hog.
The GED test is given the last Saturday of every month at Craig Field.
