The murder trial of Annie Blackmon of Selma is expected to finish today.

Defense attorney Michael Jackson said he would present his case today. The prosecution finished its case Tuesday.

Jackson said that he was planning on calling his client’s children, a doctor and possibly Blackmon herself to the stand.

According to the district attorney’s office, Lola Brown was allegedly hit by Blackmon with a blunt object on June 3, 2000. Brown was in the company of a man who had a relationship with Blackmon at the time of the incident, according to the district attorney’s office.

Brown went into a coma a day after receiving the injury and died Feb. 20, 2001, at a hospital in Birmingham.

Because of the death Brown has been charged with murder.

The autopsy report states that the cause of death was a blunt force injury to the head. The report concluded the death to be a homicide.

Jackson, however, said that Brown had many medical problems prior to the incident, including a steel plate in her head and high blood pressure.

Jackson also said that on the night in question Brown was chasing Blackmon with a knife, and that the man, Blackmon’s common-law husband, threw Brown to the ground, where she hit her head.

Brown went to the hospital and was released, Jackson said, adding that she went to the hospital the following day and was released once again.
