A Birmingham man sits in the Dallas County Jail after trying to break into a car early Sunday morning.

Around 4 a.m. Sunday the Selma Police Department received a call from a residence on Philpot Avenue, according to Lt. David Evans. A young woman said that an acquaintance had broken into her car.

When police arrived and examined the car it appeared that the suspect may have been trying to steal it. However, they weren’t certain.

Evans said that close to 5 a.m. Joseph Jackson of Birmingham, 35, was arrested for unlawful breaking and entering of a vehicle and transported to the police station.

While at the station Jackson was told to empty his pockets according to police procedure.

One of the items that Jackson took out of his pocket, Evans said, was a marijuana cigarette.

It appeared that Jackson had forgotten he even had the marijuana until he took it out of his pocket and put it on a nearby table.

Evans added that Jackson said the marijuana wasn’t his.

He was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana second degree and brought to the Dallas County Jail where he currently is being held under $5,500 bond.
