The winter chill came howling in late Thursday night, bringing with it icy roads and freezing winds. While the temperature did not break any records, it did manage to make life miserable for everyone spending time outdoors.

To make matters worse, the Arctic airmass is showing no signs of moving on. Selma residents should expect the severe weather for the next several days, with temperatures set to hover just above freezing.

Weather over the weekend will range from highs in the upper 40s to lows in the 20s.

Bailey said the cold weather can be just as serious as a heat wave when it comes to personal health.

The best way for people to avoid getting sick is simply to stay indoors, especially during the night.

Besides humans, plants and animals also need special attention during freezing weather.

Angie Brooks from Albritton’s Flowers said a blanket can be thrown over flowers and plants that can’t be brought inside.

Pets who normally stay outside should be brought indoors or in some type of shelter to prevent them from freezing to death.

According to the National Weather Service, the harsh temperatures should not last much longer. The weather should return to normal by the end of next week.
