Applications for city positions will not be received after today.

At Thursday night’s City Council work session, Personnel Director Valeria Jones said that the closing date for receiving applications for the positions of city clerk, city treasurer and finance director was Jan. 24 at 4:30 p.m.

Jones said that as of Thursday she had received a total of 58 applications for all positions &045;&045; 30 for city clerk, 18 for city treasurer and 10 for the finance director position.

Councilman Glenn Sexton said he wanted to see the resumes of those who had applied for the positions. Sexton suggested that a list of their names could be given to council members. Those who wanted to check specific resumes could then go view them.

Councilwoman Jean Martin said that the council didn’t need to view the resumes of those that didn’t meet the requirements. However, President George Evans disagreed.

Councilwoman Rita Sims Franklin then said she wanted copies of all the resumes made available to Evans. She added that the council may need to set some time aside on Monday to view them.

Evans then moved the conversation to the salaries of the different positions, adding that he thinks they’re too high and that a veteran employee in city hall may wonder why a new hire is making more money than they are.

Councilwoman Bennie Ruth Crenshaw, however, said that she didn’t want to spend a lot of time on the issue.

Mayor James Perkins Jr. recommended that the council look at the credentials in the resumes they had, and asked what the procedures were for appointing new hires to the open positions.

Evans said that in the past committees had been set up, candidates interviewed and then through the process of elimination the position eventually filled.

Evans added that the final decision on hiring a city clerk and treasurer lay in the council’s hands, though in the past feedback from the mayor had been heard.

Perkins asked why a recommendation should be made if the council didn’t

seriously consider it.

Perkins added that if the council didn’t ask him for advice concerning the city clerk and treasurer positions then he wouldn’t ask any from the council about the finance director position.

Jones said that the council would have the applicants’ information by Monday morning.

In other business, the council:

Young said that the city is selling bonds to refund two bond issues from 1993 and 1994 and raise $2,240,000 for capital improvement projects. Projects include lighting for the city.

Young added that the city is borrowing a total of $3,915,000.

Auditors were then brought into the council chambers, and a quick vote taken to enter executive session.
