Enrollment at Wallace State Community College, Selma has reached a three-year high.

When the president of Wallace State Community College, Selma gave his State of the College address last month, he had many positive remarks about the progress the school has made.

The most notable change this year is the increased enrollment at WCCS.

At least part of enrollment increase can be attributed to the new E-Learning courses being offered this spring. Students can now receive college credit from their own home through the use of the Internet. Currently, 50 students are enrolled in the online classes, with more subjects being offered for the summer semester.

Through the efforts of the WCCS Scholarship Drive, paying tuition for these classes may be less of a worry for some students next year.

Mitchell said the scholarship drive began in December and will run through March. This is the first year the college has done this type of drive, but it will likely become an annual event.

Members of the Wallace State Community College, Selma General Foundation have been working to bring in funds from private and corporate donations.

As student enrollment has increased, school officials realized the campus could use some improvement.

WCCS recently received a landscaping grant to bring more greenery to the front of the school.

Work will begin on the campus grounds as soon as the design is approved by the Department of Transportation.

Three buildings will also have their roofs raised in the upcoming months.

The college even acquired two new mini buses to provide additional transportation for students.

This is the second year Mitchell has served as president of WCCS.
