Lucy Etta Birks

Lucy Etta Birks, 81, of Safford, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at a Selma hospital.

Services are at noon Monday, Jan. 20, at Christian Light Baptist Church in Alberta, with the Rev. Nathaniel Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include five sons, Joe Bennie (Carrie) Birks, of Selma, William (Shirley) Birks of Detroit, Mich., Richard (Mary) Birks of New Jersey, Sam (Odessa) Birks of New York and Anthony Birks of Safford; three daughters, Annie Shaw (Tommy), Bennie Mae (Richard) Parker and Sylvia Parker all of New York; one sister, Rosie Hackett of Selma; 30 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law; four daughters-in-law; one brother-in-law; three sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives; two adopted granddaughters, Dorothy Parker (Kenneth) and Beverly Conners (David); and one adopted grandson, James Shaw.

Active pallbearers are grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers are members of Christian Light Baptist Church.

Willie McFlower

Willie McFlower, 77, of Dayton, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in Tuscaloosa.

Services are at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Faunsdale with the Rev. Larry Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Dayton Cemetery with Julia L. White Funeral Home directing.

James Sigler

James Sigler, 72, of Tyler, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in Birmingham.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Isabella Baptist Church in Tyler, with the Rev. Roosevelt Marzette officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with J.H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include Eloise Irby Sigler; three sons, Charles Sigler (Ella Mae), Roosevelt Sigler and Curtis Sigler all of Selma; three daughters, Gloria Rose (R.C.) of Birmingham, Margaret Sigler and Thelma Jones (Reginald) all of Selma; two brothers, Joe Sigler of New York and Eddie Sigler (Sandra) of Ohio; two sisters, Kathrine Smith (Joe) of New York and Annie Middleton (James) of Florida; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers are family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Bama Sigler.

Mr. Sigler was a farmer and a lifelong member of Isabella Baptist Church.

Janie Bean

Janie Bean, 70, of New York, formerly of Marion, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at a hospital in New York.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home in Marion. Burial will follow in Perkins Cemetery in Brent, with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Active pallbearers are her nephews.

Stonewall Conner

Stonewall Conner, 72, of Mosses, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003.

Willie B. Boykin

Willie B. Boykin, 75, of Selma, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003.

Services are at 12 noon Saturday, Jan. 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steve Washington officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his wife, Mercy Dell Boykin; parent Jonor Carter; three sons, William L. Boykin, Darryl Boykin and Anthony Smith; one daughter, Ramona Myers; four sisters, Martha Boykin, Wendy Carter, Dorothy Johnson and Carrie McKay; 22 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-in; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Derrick Boykin and a daughter, Denise Brown.

Cynthia Marshall

Cynthia Marshall, 52, of Selma, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 at a local hospital.

Services are at 12 noon Saturday, Jan. 18, at Tabernacle of Praise with the Rev. F.D. Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include parents, Robert Mershall Sr., and Josie Marshall; one son, Toussaint Marshall of Selma; three daughters, Patricia Marshall, Wilma (Terry) Hall all of Selma and Shelly (Lorenzo) Hunter of Montgomery; three brothers, Ernest Marshall, Bob Marshall and Timothy Marshall all of Selma; two sisters, Gloria (John) Mobley of Coastville, Pa., and Glenda Hagood of Maryland.; 10 grandchildren; two sons-in-law; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law; and four nephews.

Earlyne Powell

Earlyne Powell, of Detroit, Mich., formerly of Plantersville, died November, 19, 2002 in Detroit, Mich.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 23, 2002 at Green Grove Baptist Church in Detroit, Mich., with the Rev. L. A. Puckett officiating and Barksdale Funeral Home Inc. directing.

Survivors include a loving and caring daughter and son-in-law Verdies and Hosea Moore Sr.; two sisters, Edna Fenderson of Montgomery, and Avil Carter of Detroit; two grandsons, Hosea Jr. and James; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan and Ashley; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three of her siblings.

Mrs. Powell was born in Planterville, on August 7, 1905, the second of six children born to Lurella and Walter E. Pickens.

She was educated in Alabama where she also accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of College Hill A.M.E. Church in Selma.

In 1923 she married Thedore James Payne. To this union one daughter was born. She later married Dave Powell who preceded her in death.

In 1989 Mrs. Powell, came to live with her daughter and son-in-law Verdies and Hosea Moore in Detroit, Mich. She was a fun loving person, witty and pleasant to be around.

Mrs. Powell was loved by her Detroit friends most of whom affectionately called her “Granny”.
